What to Do If You Break a Part of Your Braces: Advice from Our San Diego Orthodontist

As your San Diego orthodontist, Dr. Lee often reassures patients that a broken bracket, wire, or band isn't the end of the world—but it is something you should address promptly. Braces are delicate appliances, and while they're designed to be durable, accidents can happen from eating hard foods, injuries, or simply biting into something the wrong way.

First, don’t panic. A broken piece of your braces is rarely an emergency, but it does require attention. If a bracket has come loose but is still attached to the wire, leave it in place and cover it with orthodontic wax to prevent irritation. If a wire is poking out and causing discomfort, try using a clean pencil eraser to gently push it back into place. In the meantime, wax can again be your best friend to prevent sores on your cheeks or gums.

Avoid eating hard, crunchy, or sticky foods until the issue is fixed, as they could make the damage worse. Rinse your mouth with warm salt water to keep it clean and reduce the risk of irritation or infection.

Then, call Torrey Hills Orthodontics as soon as possible. Let our team know what happened so we can advise you and fit you in if necessary. Delaying a repair could prolong your treatment time.

Remember, communication is key. We’re here to guide you through every step of your orthodontic journey. Taking quick action and following care instructions can help keep your treatment on track and your smile progressing as planned.
